About Jonathan

Jonathan was born in Brooklyn NY. He grew up hard in neighborhoods you don't want to go to. There, he learned to overcome. Next step: the U.S. Army. More lessons. Working a variety of jobs, some pleasant, some difficult, some dangerous. He learned one thing: everyone has an interesting story. There are no exceptions.

A different path to novels

I learned to write late in life. Going to college on the GI Bill, trying to be professional at something, life threw me curves. I found myself on job sites, building houses, hanging drywall, putting on roofs. My family needed the money.

And there was that three year hitch in the U.S. Army, which was both a great honor, and an infinite stressor. The kind of thing that makes you better or worse, depending on how you negotiate the effects. My protagonist has the same problem, making it easy for me to write his character.

Then came 24 more years working for government. Now, retired, I work on  houses, cars, the yard, and novels.

Here, in the Northwest, the rains are coming. They start tomorrow. As I edit this, tomorrow became today. The rains are here. Five days straight, the news says. Like living in a cloud. So I begin to write again.

My writing teacher said writing was easy; you just sit in front of your typewriter and bleed all over the paper. I think I've done that. I will hopefully continue to do that.

To those people who believe that police are a good thing, or at least can be a good thing, here are tales of a simple cop with common sense, a pure heart, and the love of all mankind.

Why I write

I like to work with my hands. Sitting at a computer and pumping out novels was new to me. But I jumped in with both feet. When I was in that world, I became engrossed. I thought about the novel I was writing constantly. I even dreamed about it. I'd wake up in the middle of the night and my mind had just fed me the outline of a new chapter. I'd never known what I was before. Now I did; I was a writer. Even if I never made a dime from that craft, it didn't matter. Was I the best? No, of course not. Yet, I pushed on. I've written and deleted whole novels. Now I have five. I'm working on number six.
